What is a suspended ceiling?

A suspended ceiling, also known as a drop ceiling or false ceiling, is a second ceiling that is suspended below the actual ceiling of a room. It is created by connecting a series of metal grids to the actual ceiling, which are then fitted with ceiling tiles or panels. The space between the two ceilings is known as the "plenum," which allows easy access to HVAC, electrical and other building systems without having to tear up the actual ceiling. Suspended ceilings are often used in commercial and industrial spaces to conceal pipes, ductwork, and cables, but are also becoming popular in residential settings for their aesthetic appeal and other benefits.
