The Aztecs incorporated natural light into their buildings through the use of skylights, clerestory windows, and open courtyards. Skylights were circular or square openings in the ceilings of rooms that allowed natural light to filter in. Clerestory windows were located near the top of walls and let in natural light without compromising privacy. Open courtyards allowed natural light to flood into the interior of buildings and also provided ventilation. In addition, colorful mosaics and reflective surfaces were used to amplify the effects of natural light, creating a dazzling play of light and shadow.
