What is a donjon?

A donjon is a type of medieval castle tower, often referred to as a keep, that served as the main fortified structure of a castle and its last line of defense. The donjon was typically built in a strategic location at the center of the castle, with thick walls, few and narrow windows, and a strong door. It could withstand siege and attack, and was often used as a residence for the lord or noble who owned the castle.
