1. Ionization smoke detectors: These detectors use a small amount of radioactive material to ionize the air inside the detector. When smoke enters the detector, the ionization process is disrupted and the detector sounds an alarm.
2. Photoelectric smoke detectors: These detectors use a light-sensitive sensor that is triggered by smoke particles. When smoke enters the detector, it scatters the light inside and triggers the sensor to sound an alarm.
Many modern smoke detectors use a combination of both ionization and photoelectric technology to provide the highest level of protection against fires.
