What is computational fluid dynamics (CFD)?

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a numerical method used to study the behavior of fluids (liquids or gases) under various physical conditions by making use of computational algorithms, mathematical models and numerical analysis techniques. It involves solving the governing equations of fluid flow, heat transfer, and other related physical phenomena using numerical methods and high-performance computers. CFD is widely used in engineering, science, and design industries to predict and analyze fluid behavior and to optimize designs before physical prototyping or testing is conducted. Some common applications of CFD include the design of aircraft, automobiles, and turbine blades, the analysis of air and water pollution, the design of clean rooms and HVAC systems, and the prediction of natural disasters such as hurricanes and tsunamis.
