What is UV mapping?

UV mapping is the process of creating a 2D representation of a 3D model's surface geometry. It is necessary to apply texture or image files to the surface of a 3D model. The UV mapping process breaks down each polygonal face of a 3D model into 2D space, leaving each face free to be edited and manipulated separately from the others. UV mapping is used extensively in video game development, architectural visualizations, and product designs where digital modeling is required.
