What is the sound pressure level (SPL)?

Sound pressure level (SPL) is a measure of the magnitude of a sound wave, expressed in decibels (dB), relative to a reference pressure level. It is a measure of the strength or intensity of a sound wave, and is often used to describe the loudness of a sound or the amount of sound energy in a given space. An increase of 10 dB in sound pressure level is perceived by the human ear as a doubling of loudness.
