How is STC rating calculated?

The STC (Sound Transmission Class) rating is calculated by measuring the amount of sound that is transmitted through a partition, such as a wall or floor, and comparing it to a reference curve. This reference curve represents the amount of sound that would be transmitted through a standard partition of the same size and construction.

The partition being tested is typically placed between two rooms, with one room serving as the source of the sound and the other as the receiver. A loudspeaker is used to generate a range of sound frequencies in the source room, which are then measured in the receiver room to determine the sound transmission characteristics of the partition.

The resulting data is then used to calculate the STC rating, which is expressed as a number between 0 and 100. A higher STC rating indicates that the partition provides better sound insulation, as it is able to reduce the amount of sound that is transmitted from one room to another.
