The term "brutalism" comes from the French word "béton brut," meaning "raw concrete." This was a term used by acclaimed Swiss architect Le Corbusier to describe his use of unadorned concrete as a key component in his designs. Eventually, the term "brutalism" was adopted more widely to describe a style of architecture characterized by the use of raw materials, angular shapes, and a focus on function over form.
