What is a cordwood house?

A cordwood house is a type of natural building made with cordwood – short logs usually about 30-40 cm long – stacked in a running bond pattern. The spaces between the logs are filled with insulating materials such as sawdust, wood chips, or other natural materials. The walls are often finished with lime plaster or earthen/clay plaster. The technique is economical and environmentally friendly as it utilizes local and renewable resources, provides a natural insulation, and minimizes waste. Cordwood houses are typically energy-efficient and have a distinctive rustic aesthetic appeal.
