What is a drop ceiling?

A drop ceiling, also known as a suspended ceiling, is a secondary ceiling that is installed below the actual ceiling of a room. It consists of a grid system of metal channels or suspension wires and ceiling tiles that are placed inside the grid. Drop ceilings are often used to conceal unsightly ceiling structures, pipes, ducts, and wiring, and also to improve acoustics and thermal insulation. They are commonly found in commercial buildings, such as offices, schools, hospitals, and retail stores, as well as in residential basements and other low-ceilinged areas.
