What is a DWG file?

A DWG (drawing) file is a proprietary file format used for storing two- and three-dimensional design data and metadata. It is mainly used by design professionals such as architects, engineers, and drafters to create technical drawings and schematics. DWG files are associated with Autodesk AutoCAD, a popular computer-aided design (CAD) software program, but can also be opened and edited in other CAD programs that support the format.
