What is seismic risk?

Seismic risk is the potential damage and loss of life caused by an earthquake, including the likelihood and severity of ground shaking, ground rupture, landslides, and other related hazards. It is influenced by factors such as the location and magnitude of earthquakes, the built environment, the levels of preparedness and mitigation measures in place, and the vulnerability of the population and infrastructure. Seismic risk assessments help to identify areas of high risk, inform land-use planning and building codes, and prioritize emergency response and recovery efforts.
