What is the seismic design category?

Seismic design category (SDC) is a classification that indicates the level of seismic hazard potential for a particular location, and it is used to establish the minimum design requirements and loadings for buildings and other structures in order to withstand earthquakes. It takes into account factors such as the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes in the area, the soil conditions, and the proximity to known fault lines, among others. There are four seismic design categories, ranging from SDC A (lowest risk) to SDC D (highest risk).
