What is the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale?

The Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale is a seismic intensity scale used to measure the intensity of shaking produced by an earthquake at a specific location. The scale ranges from I (not felt) to XII (total destruction) and is based on observable and subjective effects of an earthquake, such as damage to buildings, the onset of landslides, and the felt experiences of people in the affected area. Unlike the Richter scale, which measures the magnitude of an earthquake, the MMI scale provides information about the impact of an earthquake on people and structures rather than the energy released by the quake.
