What is the difference between a mansard and a gambrel roof?

A mansard roof has two slopes on each side, with the lower slope steeper than the upper slope. The lower slope is nearly vertical and the upper slope is more gradual. A gambrel roof also has two slopes on each side, but both slopes are concave and the lower slope is steeper than the upper slope. The gambrel roof is commonly seen on Dutch Colonial style homes, while the mansard roof is often found on French-style architecture.
