What is the difference between a parapet and a balustrade?

A parapet is a low wall, typically found on the edge of a roof, terrace or balcony, which is designed to provide protection from falling or to block the view of something unsightly. A balustrade, on the other hand, is a row of small columns, called balusters, which are topped by a rail or handrail. Balustrades are typically found on staircases, balconies, and terraces, and are designed to provide support, as well as to add aesthetic appeal. Essentially, a parapet is a solid wall, while a balustrade is an open railing.
