What is a building code?

A building code is a set of regulations, standards and guidelines that are created by local or national authorities to ensure the safety, health, and welfare of the public. Building codes provide guidelines for the design, construction, alteration, and maintenance of buildings and other structures, covering issues such as fire safety, structural stability, accessibility, plumbing and electrical systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and water usage. Building codes are enforced by local or state authorities through a variety of regulatory processes, including permitting, inspections, and certification.
