What is a caryatid?

A caryatid is a sculpted female figure used as a column or support in ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Caryatids are typically depicted wearing long, flowing robes and holding a basket or other object on their heads. They are often found in temples, palaces, and other important buildings, and their purpose is both decorative and functional, as they provide additional support for the roof or upper level of the building.
