What is a rood screen?

A rood screen is a decorative partition that separates the choir or chancel from the nave in a church. It was first used in medieval churches and often featured intricate carvings or paintings depicting biblical scenes, saints, or other religious motifs. The screen was called a "rood" because it often supported a large crucifix or cross, known as a rood or rood beam, which was placed on the top of the screen. In some cases, the screen was also used to separate the clergy from the laity during worship.
