What is a gargoyle?

A gargoyle is a carved or sculpted figure, often in the shape of an animal or mythical creature, that is used to divert rainwater away from the sides of a building. They are often found on the roofs or spouts of buildings, particularly in medieval architecture, and are usually made of stone or other durable materials. Gargoyles are also often depicted as menacing creatures with open mouths and sharp teeth, intended to ward off evil spirits and protect the building from harm.
