What is a peripteral temple?

A peripteral temple is a temple surrounded by a single row of columns on all sides. In other words, the columns completely encircle the temple, creating a peristyle. This style of temple is common in Ancient Greek architecture and was used for both secular and religious buildings. The most famous example is the Parthenon in Athens, which is a peripteral temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.
