What is a code enforcement officer?

A code enforcement officer is a professional responsible for ensuring that individuals, businesses, and organizations comply with local, state, and federal rules, codes, and regulations. They inspect properties and facilities to make sure that they meet safety and health requirements and investigate complaints of code violations such as zoning, building, fire, and environmental codes. They work with property owners and tenants to educate them about the regulations, issue warnings or citations, and take legal action if necessary to enforce compliance.
