What is a construction claim?

A construction claim is a formal request made by a contractor or subcontractor to recover additional compensation or time due to unforeseen circumstances, unexpected costs, or delays that have affected the construction project. Typically, construction claims occur when there is a disagreement between the contractor and the owner over the scope of the project, the timeline, or the payment terms. The claim may be filed as a result of design errors, delays caused by client or site factors, or design changes that result in the project being delayed or extended beyond its original timeline. Once a claim has been filed, the parties involved in the construction project will need to negotiate a settlement or submit the claim to an independent arbitrator or court for resolution.
