A suspension bridge has cables suspended from towers, which hold up the roadway. A cable-stayed bridge also has towers, but instead of cables hanging down from the towers and holding up the roadway, the cables are attached to the towers and directly support the roadway. In other words, the cables reach from the towers to the roadway and support it from above.
