There are several common types of retaining walls:
1. Gravity walls - Made of concrete, stone, or brick and rely on their own weight to hold back soil.
2. Cantilever walls - These walls are made of reinforced concrete and use a lever-like design to resist the pressure from soil.
3. Sheet pile walls - These walls are made of steel, vinyl or wood planks and are used for soft soils.
4. Anchored walls - These walls are reinforced with cables or rods anchored to rock or soil to resist soil pressure.
5. Gabion walls - A Gabion wall is a wall made of wire baskets filled with rocks, stacked on top of each other. Gabions act as a permeable barrier to prevent soil erosion.
6. Reinforced soil walls - These walls feature a geogrid or other reinforcement material, which is embedded into the soil behind the wall to add strength.
7. Counterfort walls - These walls are similar to cantilever walls, but have closely spaced concrete columns, or counterforts, connected to the inside of the wall, increasing the wall's stability.
