What is soil consolidation?

Soil consolidation is the process of compressing soil by removing or expelling the air and water from the voids within the soil. This process usually happens as a result of applied load on the soil from buildings, infrastructure, and other structures that are built on top of it. Over time, the weight of these structures cause the soil to gradually settle and become more compact, reducing the volume of air and water in the soil. This process ultimately results in a more stable foundation for structures to be built on.
