The Pedagogy Theory of learning is an approach to teaching that places the teacher in a position of authority and control over the learning process. The teacher is seen as the expert, and students are seen as passive recipients of knowledge. The focus is on the transmission of information from the teacher to the student, with little emphasis on student-led inquiry or exploration.
In this theory, learning is a process of depositing information into the minds of students, much like a bank deposit. The teacher carefully selects and delivers content to the students, who are expected to receive and retain it. Assessment measures how much of this knowledge the students have acquired.
Pedagogy theory is also sometimes contrasted with and compared to andragogy, an approach in which the learner is seen as an active partner in the learning process. Andragogy focuses on the needs and interests of the learner, rather than solely on the knowledge the teacher wants to impart.
