What is the Sustainable Sites Initiative?

The Sustainable Sites Initiative (SSI) is a program that promotes sustainable practices, principles, and strategies in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of landscapes. It was developed by the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at The University of Texas at Austin, and the United States Botanic Garden, in collaboration with a diverse group of stakeholder organizations.

The goal of the SSI is to create landscapes that are regenerative and enhance the health and well-being of communities and the environment. This includes a focus on improving soil health, reducing water consumption, maximizing biodiversity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting social equity. The SSI provides a rating system and certification program that evaluates and recognizes sustainable landscape practices and projects.
