What is environmental justice?

Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, or other socioeconomic factors, in the creation and implementation of environmental policies, regulations, and projects. It recognizes that historically marginalized communities have faced disproportionate exposure to environmental hazards and injustices, and seeks to ensure that those communities have equal access to clean air, water, and other natural resources. Environmental justice also includes the recognition of indigenous rights and ownership of traditional lands and resources.
