What is transit-oriented development?

Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a type of land use planning and development that prioritizes the creation of mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly, and transit-oriented communities or neighborhoods. TOD involves designing and building communities around public transportation systems such as rail, bus or subway stations, with the goal of encouraging transit ridership, reducing traffic congestion, and increasing walkability and connectivity within the community. It often includes a mix of residential, commercial, office, and community spaces, creating vibrant centers of activity where people can live, work, and play within a compact, walkable area. TOD aims to create sustainable, livable, and walkable communities that are less dependent on cars and encourage the use of public transportation.
