A thermal mass is a material that can absorb, store, and release energy in the form of heat. In building design, thermal mass is used to regulate indoor temperature and reduce energy consumption by maintaining a stable indoor environment. The thermal mass can be made up of materials such as concrete, brick, stone or water. These materials are usually placed in the interior of a building where they can absorb heat during the day and release it at night when the outside temperature drops. The thermal mass slows down the rate of temperature change inside the building, giving occupants a more comfortable living or working environment. By using thermal mass in a building, heating and cooling systems can be reduced in size or eliminated altogether, resulting in lower energy bills and a more sustainable building design.
